New To School?

Welcome to Janney. Please refer to the summer mailing that is sent out (and posted on Digital Backpack in AtoZ) in early August each year for detailed information along with the Back to School Checklist.

School Hours

  • School hours are 8:35 am to 3:10 (PK/K), 3:15 (1st/2nd/3rd), or 3:20 (4th/5th) pm.
  • Before school supervision is provided by Janney+ (JAC) on the Janney campus (7:30 – 8:40 am). The school does not provide supervision of students on the playground or Terrace prior to 8:35. Students arriving before 8:35 must be under the care of a parent or care-giver.
  • Afternoon care is available via Janney+ (JAC) until 6:30 pm. The Janney Enrichment Program provides a range of exciting classes and activities from 3:30– 5:30 pm. Otherwise, students may not remain on campus to play after school unless under the direct supervision of an engaged and attentive parent or caregiver.

Attendance

  • School attendance is required for all students who reach five years of age on or before September 30th of the current school year. To report an absence, send an email to attendance@janneyschool.org and your child’s classroom teacher with the detailed reason for the absence (e.g. sick with temperature or sick with strep throat), and please send the notice in a timely matter.
  • Tardies – Students are considered tardy to school after 8:50 am. In these cases, proceed with your child to the front office to sign your child in and to receive a tardy slip.
  • Excused absences are when school-aged students are absent from school with a valid excuse and parental approval. Examples of excused absences include:
    • Death or serious illness in the student’s family
    • Illness of the student (those absent due to illness for more than 5 days must provide a doctor’s certificate)
    • Observance of a religious holiday
    • Court appearances
    • Family time prior to a military deployment or after a military deployment are excused.
    • Medical reasons such as a doctor’s appointment (a doctor’s note is required). Please do your best to schedule these appointments outside of school hours.
  • If a student is absent, parents will receive an automated ConnectEd call/email. If the absence is unexcused, parents will also receive a call from their student’s teacher. A set of progressive responses, as outlined by DCPS policy, will take place if a student has multiple absences. If a student has a regular pattern of tardiness, the parents will receive a phone call/email/letter informing them of this problem. Our goal is to support families in ensuring that these attendance guidelines are met.  Go to DCPS Attendance Policy page for more detailed information.
  • Early Dismissal — Parents need to send notes from home or email to teachers if an early dismissal is needed. This practice will assist the teacher in making arrangements so that disruptions in the school day are minimized and ensure the student receives any relevant homework or announcements before leaving for the day.  Parents, guardians, and other approved caretakers should report to the office and sign the Early Dismissal book before a student is allowed to leave the school grounds. In the event of an early dismissal, caretakers should not go to the classroom to pick up a child. The child will be called to the office, and the authorized caretaker should wait in the front foyer.
  • There will be no early dismissal for students between 2:45-3:15 pm. This is one of the busiest times of the day when students are transitioning and reflecting with their classmates. If you need to pick your child up  early, it must be done prior to 2:45 pm.

Jamboree/Morning Arrival Routine

  • Jamboree is the morning assembly of the Janney community (grades 1 through 5), and we welcome families to attend. It is primarily located on the soccer field. During Jamboree, teachers greet students, and classes may have short presentations before entering the building. Please respect the safety patrol students on duty and follow their directions as well as the directions of the staff.
  • Students who arrive before 8:35 a.m. must be accompanied by an adult or check in to the Janney+ before-care services. Students with adult supervision are allowed to use the equipment and play ball games until 8:30 a.m. Please help to remind students after 8:30 that they should be in their lines, and all toys are in their hands and staying still. There will be an announcement outside to signal the beginning of Jamboree at 8:35 a.m.
  • At 8:35, students in grades 1 through 5 join their teachers on the South Terrace and Turf Field. (Please see the Jamboree Map for homeroom locations). At 8:35, we begin Jamboree, entering the building/field and starting our day at 8:40. On the first days of school, look for the class sign to locate your teacher. Parents will say goodbye to students prior to their entry into the building/field, even on the first day of school. Please feel welcome but not obligated to attend Jamboree.
  • PK and K students may access the building and their classrooms at 8:35.
  • We will NOT hold Jamboree in the event of rain or temperatures at or below 32 degrees by 8:15 a.m. Staff will open the front and rear atrium door entrances by 8:20 a.m. on these days. Please follow the indoor arrival procedures listed below.
  • During Winter months, Jamboree will move indoors to the gym with only students in select grades attending each day. Click here for detailed information on indoor Jamboree schedules. Students in grades not participating in indoor Jamboree should follow the indoor arrival procedures listed below.
  • Parents should stand behind classes and not block any child’s view. They also must be silent during presentations, just as our students are expected to be. Thanks for helping to remind other adults of these rules. Dogs must be on leashes and should be held away from the field and classroom lines, waiting to the side of the 42nd street stairs.
  • Parents should say goodbye to students at the Jamboree line spot.  Parents may also enter if their child’s class is holding an Open House that day. In case of main office business or an appointment or meeting with a staff member, please go to the front entrance to sign in at the security desk and get a visitor’s pass

Indoor Arrivals and Dismissals

In the event of an indoor arrival, please keep these policies in mind:

  • At 8:20, the front doors on Albemarle and the rear atrium doors (soccer field) will be opened.  The exterior cafeteria door will remain open as well to accommodate morning JAC.
  • If entering before 8:30, make your way the cafeteria where you can either stay with your child or drop them off.  Connect with a JAC Counselor in the cafeteria to hand off supervision responsibility.
  • At 8:30, students will be released to their classrooms from the cafeteria, where teachers will be ready to accept them.
  • At 8:35, the east entrance (near the garden) will be opened.
  • After 8:35, arriving students may make their way directly to their classrooms for the start of their day.

In the event of an indoor dismissal, please keep these policies in mind:

  • Janney follows a rolling dismissal schedule.  It begins with PK and K releasing at 3:10. Grades 1-3 release at 3:15, and dismissal concludes with grades 4 and 5 exiting at 3:20.
  • Please arrive at our building no earlier than 3:00 for dismissal on days with inclement weather.
  • If arriving between 3:00 and 3:10, please use the front doors to enter, and wait in the foyer area near security until a staff member or security guard releases you to wait outside classrooms at 3:10.
  • At 3:10, the front doors and rear atrium doors will be opened by a staff member or security guard.
  • If you are picking up students from multiple grade levels, start with the youngest first, then move upstairs as needed to wait for the dismissal times of the older students at their classroom doors.
