The Janney education is further enriched by programs and activities that exist outside the classroom.

Student Leadership

Student Council

The Student Council consists of representatives from grades 2-5, plus officers elected each fall by students in grades 3-5. Students also elect a student representative to the School Improvement Team. Members provide leadership, represent Janney students, and organize a range of activities, including community service. Participation in the Student Council is determined by an election in the fall.

Safety Patrol

The Janney Safety Patrol helps bring order to morning drop off procedures. Members of the Safety Patrol arrive early to set up and take down signs for outdoor line-up. They also help children who are being dropped off from cars in the drop-off line get out of their cars safely. Interested students in grades 2-5 must obtain an application from the front office.

Janney won the 2023-2024 DCIAA Elementary Girls Basketball Championship!

In the fall, Janney has an Interscholastic cross country running team for both girls and boys in 4th and 5th grades. Tryouts are typically held during the first week of school and the season lasts until the end of October. Practices are twice a week: Friday after school and early Saturday mornings. The meets consist of a two-mile cross country run at various locations. Meets are typically on weekdays after school and some Saturdays. DCPS student athletes are required to submit updated health forms and participation forms. Forms can be found here and must be submitted and cleared by DCIAA Athletic Trainers before students can participate in athletic contests.

Interscholastic Basketball

Janney fields a girls and a boys basketball team each winter, typically starting in November, for students in 4th and 5th grade. The teams practice twice a week and play against other DCPS schools. All interested 4th and 5th grade athletes should submit a complete participation form and Universal Health Certificate before try-outs. Forms should be submitted electronically and can be found here. Completed forms are required to participate.

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is an after-school class offered to girls in grades 3-5. This nationwide program teaches girls about running, but also about health, fitness, body image, self-esteem, and community service. It is a 12-week character-building program of experiential learning through running. The program culminates each season in a non-competitive 5K race event which gives the girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. There will be one season of Girls on the Run in the Spring. Practices will be held at Janney on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30-4:45 PM. Participants must be able to attend both practice times on a regular basis in order to receive the full benefit of the program. Limited space is available, and priority will be given to new participants. Girls on the Run is led by our site liaison, Haley Chetrit, and coaches, Keri Giguere, Meg Hahn, Amanda Sellinger, and Cara Zanta.

In May 2024, Janney students will perform Disney’s Finding Nemo Kids!
The Janney Band

The Band performs several times during the school year including at the winter and spring concerts and the Janney Musical. Beginning and continuing musicians are welcome! Our specialists give beginning group instruction on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and drums. Orchestral string players who are taking private lessons are also welcome. If you are just beginning, we would be happy to chat with you about your choice of instruments. (Younger students might begin with the trumpet or clarinet, then, as they grow in size, may transition to a larger instrument.) Morning group lessons begin in the music room in September. By mid-September, full band rehearsals start. Ideally, the students will attend three or more of the seven-ish practice sessions each week (five mornings and two after school.) Afternoon days are determined in the Fall. Janney has a limited number of instruments available for rent on a first come-first served basis. Instruments can also be purchased or rented from local music stores. (Buying new or used instruments online is NOT recommended. A long-unused instrument, no matter its quality, usually needs overhauling to be brought up to snuff.) Ideally, students would own an instrument after the first year of band. Janney Musical

Each winter, 5th graders are invited to audition for the musical. Any child auditioning for the musical can take part, and there are also opportunities for students to be involved in building the set and in the stage crew. The musical is directed by parent volunteers. There are also plenty of opportunities for parents to be involved in production, costumes, design and production of the program, stage design and building, and helping out with rehearsals.
