Janney’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) designs, solicits funds for, and implements a wide range of programs that complement and enhance the educational and other programs offered by District of Columbia Public Schools.

Janney parents and community members contribute thousands of volunteer hours each school year to organize efforts in arts education, school communication, community outreach, instructional support, facilities and grounds maintenance, and fundraising. The PTA’s priorities are determined by input from Janney parents, teachers and staff.

The Executive Board meets once a month in the evening from September through June. All members of the Janney community are encouraged to join and attend Community Meetings which are held twice a year.

Events
Event planner or life of the party? Volunteer to gather people together to have fun and raise funds! Plan one of our biggest and best-loved annual fundraising events of the year, such as the spring Auction, an evening of music, food, and bidding, or the 5K & Fun Run in the fall. Celebrate the cultures and creativity of our school community by helping to put on our Winter Market, Talent Show, or International Night. And, build community by volunteering for our annual picnics, Bingo Night, or Movie Night.
Sales & Raffles
Great at sales? Put your skills to use managing our December tree and greens sale, the Winter Raffle, our basketball Bracket Challenge in March, or by selling Janney Gear year-round!
Passive Fundraising
Help other organizations help Janney! Work to get restaurants, corporations, and other groups to give back to Janney through affiliate programs and special events. Or, encourage parents to pursue opportunities offered by their employers.
Welcome & Recognition
Welcome new and prospective families to Janney by organizing Open Houses, Parent-led Tours, or Grade-Level Coffees for families and acting as a resource for families to answer questions. Coordinate Staff Appreciation events to recognize teachers and staff or help plan an end-of-year awards ceremony for volunteers. 5th Grade parents are invited to coordinate our annual Promotion celebrations, including a party for students (and a separate party for their parents!).
School Assistance
Help with day-to-day operations by volunteering for committees that directly impact students and school facilities. Help reunite students with their lost items at our Lost & Found, volunteer to assist in the Art Studio or Library, or get your hands dirty while making Janney’s grounds, garden and chicken coop look its best. Individual homerooms need Room Parents to coordinate class events and facilitate communicate from the PTA to parents. Or, volunteer to help with occasional or as-needed events such as picture day or preventative lice checks.
Community Service
Lead Janney families in giving back to the community by helping those in need. Coordinate volunteers and collect contributions for various Community Service projects through the year.
Communications
Our communications committee gets the word out about all the wonderful things happening at Janney, including updating the website, Remind, distributing a weekly newsletter email, and managing active Instagram and Facebook accounts. They also manage the Membership Toolkit, a searchable school directory.

The Janney PTA Executive Board leads and coordinates PTA programs, fundraising and spending. Its membership consists of two presidents, two past presidents, two vice presidents, two treasurers, and two secretaries, the Janney principal and vice-principal and two Janney teacher/staff representatives.
