PTA

Janney’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) designs, solicits funds for, and implements a wide range of programs that complement and enhance the educational and other programs offered by District of Columbia Public Schools.

The PTA accomplishes these things through 40+ volunteer committees that organize efforts in arts education, school communication, community outreach, instructional support, facilities and grounds maintenance, and fundraising. Its priorities are determined by input from Janney parents, teachers and staff.

Events Committees

Great at organizing events? Volunteer to gather people together to have fun and raise funds!

AuctionThe Auction is our largest fundraising event of the year! A committee of Janney’s most dedicated parents plans this spring fundraiser. The group solicits auction items from neighborhood companies, school sponsors and the extended Janney community and puts together a fabulous evening of fun, music, food and bidding!
5K & Fun RunThis committee plans and implements one of Janney’s biggest fundraisers, our beloved 5K & Fun Run, including organizing the many volunteers who help with the route and refreshments.
International NightThis wonderful Janney tradition entails an evening of food, music, and crafts sponsored by the PTA for students, parents, and staff members to showcase club activities and enjoy the diverse cultures within our community.
Winter MarketStudents, teachers and parents all come together to sell their treasures ahead of the holidays, along with many more activities to celebrate winter at an annual WinterFest & Winter Market.
Annual PicnicThis event includes food trucks and a DJ!
Talent ShowThis committee organizes an annual Talent Show for students.
Bingo NightThis committee organizes a fun family night of bingo at Janney to raise funds for the PTA.
Movie NightThis committee organizes a movie and popcorn night at Janney.

Sales & Raffles Committees

Great at sales? Put your skills to use managing an annual sale, a raffle, or by selling Janney gear!

Holiday Greens SaleThis committee manages the sale of holiday greens throughout December.
Winter RaffleThe annual winter raffle is one of the PTA’s most important fundraisers. Tickets are sold by a team of parent volunteers, and then winning tickets are drawn during the Winter Market for fabulous cash and/or prizes.
Bracket ChallengeThis committee organizes a Bracket Challenge during NCAA basketball tournaments.
Janney MerchandiseThis committee manages the Janney merchandise program including selecting, ordering, and selling branded items for the Janney Spirit Store. The store sells merchandise online year-round and at several in-person events.
Used Book SaleThe ultimate in scholastic recycling! This committee organizes the Janney Used Book Sale. Volunteers organize the book donation drive prior to the sale and organize the many boxes of donated books. On the day of the sale they set up a “book store” at Janney and act as cashiers and baggers. This committee also finds suitable locations for donating books at the end of the sale.

Passive Fundraising Committees

Help other organizations help Janney! Work to get restaurants, corporations, and other groups to give back to Janney through affiliate programs and special events.

Dine Out for JanneyThis committee will organize monthly dinners at local restaurants with a portion of the proceeds from sales given back to Janney.
Politics & Prose SaleDuring one weekend each fall, local bookstore Politics & Prose donates a percentage of its sales to Janney. This committee organizes the annual fundraiser by publicizing the event within Janney and the local community, as well as coordinating “wish lists” from teachers, resource specialists, and the school library.
Affiliate ProgramThis committee is dedicated to raising money for Janney through various Affiliate Programs, including Amazon, Giant A+ rewards, eScrip, and Shutterfly. Click here to link your Giant cards, raise money when you shop on Amazon, or learn about our other affiliate programs.
Box TopsIf you buy General Mills foods such as cereals, granola bars, and other grocery items, clip the coupons labeled “Box Tops for Education” and put them in the box just inside the front door of Janney. Our school gets 10 cents for every coupon.
Matching GrantsThis committee is responsible for encouraging parents to pursue Matching Grant opportunities offered by their employers. Committee members raise awareness of matching grants, help to facilitate the donation process, and track any grants that come in throughout the year.

Welcome & Recognition Committees

Welcome new families to Janney and recognize staff and current families with awards and appreciation.

Open HouseThis committee coordinates open houses to showcase Janney for prospective families by recruiting tour guides, ordering coffee, placing ads in Northwest Current, etc.
School TourThis committee coordinates monthly school tours for prospective Janney families.
WelcomeThe purpose of this group is to provide a go-to resource for families with questions about Janney and to assure their transition to Janney is as easy and comfortable as possible.
HospitalityThis committee coordinates refreshments for grade-level and principal’s coffees.
AwardsThis committee plans for a special awards ceremony for families who are leaving Janney and have contributed significant efforts to the school. The ceremony takes place at the last Community Meeting of each year.
5th Grade GraduationThis committee purchases t-shirts and plans the graduation party (food, entertainment, chaperones, etc.) for all 5th graders.
Staff AppreciationThis committee coordinates events that thank the teachers and staff for their dedication to our children. Thank you activities include holiday appreciation gifts, an end of year staff luncheon, and small tokens of thank you to recognize teachers and staff for their hard work and commitment to Janney throughout the year.

School Assistance Committees

Help with day-to-day operations by volunteering for committees that directly impact students and school facilities.

Lost & FoundParent volunteers work to reunite Janney families with their lost items by organizing and displaying the contents of the Lost and Found. The committee also handles donation of unclaimed items to charity.
Art Studio VolunteersA team of volunteers supports the Art studio by mounting and displaying student artwork, preparing materials, and assisting with special projects.
Chicken CommitteeVolunteers help maintain the chicken coop, caring for the chickens and ensuring this much-loved Janney tradition continues each year.
Lice CheckAs a preventative measure, a team of parent volunteers periodically check Janney students for lice.
Room ParentA fun and rewarding way to get directly involved in your child’s class! Room Parents coordinate parent support to the classroom, organize class events and parties, and facilitate communication from teachers and the PTA to parents.
SafetyThis committee coordinates with school administration on school safety issues and coordinates safety trainings for teachers and staff, as well as Janney+ instructors. It conducts research, provides recommendations, and reviews the school polices and procedures to ensure the safety of the school.
Outdoors & GardenThis committee helps with improving, maintaining, and beautifying the Janney school grounds, including coordinating “spruce up” days (fun for the whole family), one in the fall and one in the spring. Its volunteers also support the Janney Garden throughout the school year.
Library VolunteersA team of volunteers supports the school librarian during classroom visits by reading stories and assisting students with research and word processing. Volunteers also assist with shelving, data entry, book repair, and book circulation.
School PhotosThis committee plans and executes the annual picture day and subsequent distribution of photos to families.

Community Service Committees

Lead Janney families in giving back to the community by helping those in need.

Community ServiceThis committee coordinates volunteers and contributions for various Community Service projects through the year.
Blood DriveThis committee organizes Red Cross blood drives hosted at Janney.

Communications Committees

Get the word out about all the wonderful things happening at Janney.

Family DirectoryThis committee oversees the maintenance and development of Membership Toolkit, an online platform for a searchable school directory and maintenance of emergency contact information for parents. They also coordinate the printing of a paper copy of the directory which is distributed to families.
NewsletterEditors compile, edit, and publish a weekly newsletter distributed electronically to all Janney families.
Web/Social MediaThis committee updates and maintains the Janney website and social media accounts.

The Executive Board meets once a month in the evening from September through June. All members of the Janney community are encouraged to join and attend Community Meetings which are held twice a year. Meeting Minutes available here.

The Janney PTA Executive Board leads and coordinates PTA programs, fundraising and spending. Its membership consists of two presidents, two past presidents, two vice presidents, two treasurers, and two secretaries, the Janney principal and vice-principal and two Janney teacher/staff representatives.
