Dear Janney Community,

Happy New Year!  I hope you all were able to enjoy a relaxing and safe holiday break.

I want to start by extending a thank you on behalf of our teachers and staff for the generosity and appreciation that you showed all of us prior to the break.  During an isolating and challenging year, we are grateful for your support.

Tonight’s newsletter will focus on our reopening plans.  The month of January will move quickly, and a lot of information will be shared each week via this newsletter.  All information that we share with the community related to reopening will be posted on our Janney Sharepoint site.  Please bookmark this page and remember that you must use your child’s Office365 log-in to access the material.

Before I share the highlights of our Advisory 3 plans, I want to note that Mayor Bowser provided a key update to the vaccination timeline during yesterday’s Situational Update.  We were excited to learn that teachers and school-based staff are scheduled to receive the vaccine beginning the week of January 25.  More details are to follow, but this is an incredibly hopeful development as we launch our Advisory 3 reopening plans and as we look to expand those plans for Advisory 4.

I provided a rough outline of our reopening plans prior to the winter break.  A few key takeaways include:
*We prioritized our younger students and are returning more students in grades PK-2 than grades 3-5;
*We are limited in how many students we can invite back to the building due to logistical factors such as staffing limitations, health and safety protocols, and in-person class size limitations;
*I engaged teachers and our LSAT over a period of three-four weeks to land on the best possible plan for Janney given many of these limitations;
*We believe our current plan can be grown without further disruption for Advisory 4 – meaning any class changes that will occur for Advisory 3 will hold for Advisory 4.

Specific grade-level plans are now live on the SharePoint site.  Please note that I have included the names of staff members who will report in-person as the lead teacher for in-person learning classrooms.  I have not shared the names of Specials teachers, co-teachers, student support service providers, or the related service providers who will be reporting in-person as this information is still being finalized.

A few important points to know about our current plan:
*Lottery results for in-person learning seats will be released via an email from me beginning Monday, January 11.
*If your child does not receive a lottery spot or you choose to keep your child virtual for Advisory 3 and your child’s teacher is reporting in-person, your child will be placed in a new, virtual class.  This will be your child’s new class for the remainder of the school year.
*Students in grades PK-2 may be placed in a new class based on teachers reporting in-person and on lottery results.
*Due to the nature of the in-person models for grades 3-5, we will not make any changes to class placement for our 3rd-5th grade students for Advisory 3.
*If you have questions about health and safety protocols, I encourage you to look at other resources that have been shared on our site or to visit the DCPS Reopen Strong website.
*I know that we are not meeting the demand for in-person learning for Advisory 3 in grades 3-5.  I am committed to finding ways to bring students in those grades back to campus for outdoor, social and extracurricular opportunities.  More information on those opportunities will be shared with the community soon.

Finally, I am including this message from Janney Plus Director, Caroline Laub:

Dear Janney Families,

Thank you for the generosity you showed us in 2020. It has been a difficult year, but we are so fortunate to be part of such a wonderful and supportive community. We are looking forward to 2021 and once again having the opportunity to engage with Janney children and families. Janney+ strives to foster a sense of belonging, inclusion, and connection between students and their peers through enrichment and care that provides opportunities for education, support, and growth. As we look ahead, we would love to hear from you on the best way we can accomplish this mission. Please take a few minutes to complete the following survey surrounding enrichment classes for this winter and spring. The results of this survey will be extremely helpful in guiding our future planning and vendor selection. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon!

Thank you for your continued support.
