Dear Janney Families,

We have still not been able to resolve the issue with yahoo.com email addresses receiving emails from dc.gov email addresses. We hope to resolve this issue within the next week and will keep you posted. Please know that if you have a yahoo.com email address, you might not have received communication from your child’s teacher or Janney staff members recently. If you have an alternative email address, please use that to communicate with Janney until we have this issue resolved. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

A huge thanks to all who came out on Saturday morning to help us spread the wood carpet on the mulch playground. We were able to spread 76 cubic yards of wood carpet in just about two hours! The kids have enjoyed the new playground material.

Included in this week’s newsletter: our student support services column from our school counselors, Lisa Oakley and Sara Solomon.

Student Support Services Column

Yesterday as I was putting up a poster outside my office that reads “October is Bullying Prevention Month,” a student walked by and asked earnestly, “Ms. Oakley, isn’t every month bullying prevention month?” Ah, such wisdom! He was on point with that comment. But to highlight the issue here at Janney, during the month of October, we are going to be talking about it in our guidance classes in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The younger grades will address the issue in the framework of kindness and what we can do to show kindness and support to everyone around us. In grades 3 – 5 we’ll focus on how we define bullying and how it can be different from teasing, rudeness, or anger. The students will spend some time reflecting on what they can do if they feel they are being bullied or if they see someone else being bullied. We’ll talk about what it means to be an “upstander” – someone who takes action to report or stop what they see. We’ll also have our Blue Shirt Day on October 18th, where we ask everyone to wear
a blue shirt to school to show their commitment to prevent bullying and show kindness.

School Counselors

Warmly,
Alysia Lutz, Principal
