Dear Janney Families,

Thank you to all who joined us for our Rain Garden Celebration Day on Saturday.   We planted flowers, observed our rain garden in action, and sampled produce from the Garden Market.  A big thanks to the teachers and parents who served on our RiverSmart committee and to our science team who worked tirelessly on this project!

Included in this week’s newsletter: important reminders about parking at Janney; a link to this week’s THT which includes a flyer for our upcoming book sale at Politics and Prose on September 29 and 30; and, an entry from Ms. Toni, our Speech-Language Pathologist in this week’s Student Support Services column.

Parking at Janney: Yuma St. Alley
As many of you know, we share the alley off of Yuma St with St. Alban’s Early Childhood Center (SAECC).   The alley sees a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic each day and I want to offer a few reminders to our families and staff members who use this entry point for arrival and dismissal.

The families at SAECC use the parking spaces directly adjacent to the St. Ann’s building for drop-off and pick-up.  SAECC staff members also use these spots for parking.  These spots are not intended for Janney-use during the week.  Thank you for respecting this space and for refraining from parking in the designated SAECC spots.  SAECC will be issuing car decals for their staff and families soon and will begin enforcing their parking rules.

Please note that the Yuma St alley is used as both an entrance and exit point for Janney and for SAECC.  The entrance to the SAECC parking lot from Wisconsin Ave is a point of exit only for all vehicle traffic.  Vehicles should not be accessing Janney, SAECC, or the Yuma St. alley by entering from Wisconsin Ave.

Finally, please be mindful that the Yuma St alley sees a lot of pedestrian traffic and drive slowly through that area.  Thank you for respecting our shared space.

Student Support Services Column
Meet our school Speech-Language Pathologist, Toni Carroll-Wills, MS, CCC-SLP.   Mrs. Wills/Ms. Toni has been a practicing speech-language pathologist (SLP) for over 18 years, with DC Public Schools. Ms. Toni has been part of the Janney community for the past 16 years, servicing children in grades Pre-K through 5 as well as completing screeners, assessments, providing parent trainings, and consulting with classroom teachers.  As a school-based SLP, Ms. Toni’s role includes the following:

-Prevent
-Identify
-Assess

Prevent: To prevent communication disorders by collaborating with teachers, counselors, special education teachers, Para-professionals, and parents to help provide pre-referral intervention strategies for classroom communication which may include reading, writing, and social language skills. This may be done in the form of classroom/playground observations, teacher/parent/private therapist interview, articulation/language screening-which are all considered RTI-Response to Intervention strategies.

Identify: To identify any students with suspected communication disorders with participation from parents, teachers, and the multidisciplinary team.

Assess: To assess the students’ overall communication skills by using various formal and informal assessment measures. This information is then evaluated in order to determine if a speech and language impairment is present and it’s educational impact.  From there, the MDT (multidisciplinary team) will work together to develop a plan or for the child based upon identified areas of weakness.
Mrs. Toni is a proud graduate of Howard University, where she received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees.  She hails from sunny Los Angeles, California, and often returns to visit family and friends.  Ms. Toni loves to talk and looks forward to sharing a few speechy tips and tricks with the Janney school community in the December and May newsletters! Here’s to a fantastic school year!!

Warmly,
Alysia Lutz, Principal
