Dear Janney Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday weekend.  Thanks to those families who attended last week’s Back-to-School Night.  If you missed the session in the cafeteria, the slides from that presentation are included here.

Also included in this week’s newsletter: our first weekly column from the student support services team; an announcement about tomorrow night’s Janney Days book talk; an announcement from our science team; and, a reminder about upcoming events, including grade level coffees and the Fall Picnic.

There are no school-wide electronic THT announcements this week.

Student Support Services Column
Greetings from the Student Support Team!  As you may know, throughout the year we use this space in the newsletter to share insights and information about what we do here at Janney and how this connects to student growth and development both in and out of school.  We want you to get to know us, so each week this month we will profile different members of the student support team- some of whom you may be familiar with and others who are new.  This week we introduce you to our schoolcounselors, Lisa Oakley and Cydney Lewis.

Lisa Oakley: So happy to be back here at Janney for my 3rd year! I am a licensed clinical social worker and function as one of the part time school counselors here at Janney.  The students know me as part of our “worry doctor” team since they know they can come to us when they are having a worry, a problem, or just need some quiet space to reflect. I’ll be teaching guidance classes to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders this
year and will be continuing with our Pure Edge curriculum which focuses on mindfulness as a gateway to building our powers of calm, positivity, kindness, and focus.  I also host small friendship groups and social skills groups during lunch.  I am always happy to work with parents and families in any way I can by providing resources, referrals or support with any challenges that may arise.  I am here at Janney on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Cydney Lewis:  I am thrilled to have an expanded role at Janney this year as a counselor and am excited to be part of such a collaborative, dynamic learning community.  I am a licensed school counselor with specialist trainings in anxiety management and grief & loss.  I also have a background in special education with an emphasis on social deficits and behavior analysis.  I am in K-2 classrooms regularly to
teach community class, where the focus is on mindfulness, self-regulation and problem-solving. In addition, I also host small friendship groups and social skills groups during lunch.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s progress and experience – it’s always nice to put faces to names! I’m at Janney on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Janney Days Book Talk
New Janney Days!

About 20 years ago, the PTA published a meticulously researched history book of our elementary school, based on records, archives, and interviews with former students and parents. The PTA is pleased to announce the re-publication of Janney Days with an update covering the last two decades. Come Wednesday evening, September 5th to a book talk about Janney and its history, featuring the authors of Janney Days and staff who have witnessed changes at the school. Learn about Janney, its role in the development of Tenleytown and its critical place in the community. Copies of the book will be on sale, 6:30 pm in the cafeteria.

From the Janney Science Team
Did your child keep a summer science journal?
We want to celebrate and share!  Tell them to come to your science room with your journal and lunch at your lunch time THIS WEEK-

Kindergarteners and First Graders Thursday September 6
Second Graders Wednesday September 5
Third Graders Wednesday September 5
Fourth and Fifth Graders Friday September 8.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be long or fancy.
Choose a favorite page or item to share, and we will celebrate with a small sweet treat.
Questions? Contact your science teacher.

Upcoming events – Reminder
For the month of September, we will hold grade level coffees so that families from each grade level get to know each other in a smaller, more informal setting.  The grade level coffees will take place in the cafeteria.

Grade level coffees:
1st/2nd: September 5 @ 8:45 am
3rd/4th/5th: September 12 @ 8:45 am

Many of you have noticed our new rain gardenin the garden area.  This space is almost complete and was constructed using a grant we received from RiverSmart Schools, a program of the District Department of Energy and Environment.  We will host a garden clean-up day on Saturday, September 8 from 9am-12pm and will host a ribbon cutting ceremony once our space is complete on Saturday, September 15.  More information will be shared in next week’s newsletter.

We are also excited for our upcoming Fall Picnic that will take place on Friday, September 14.  Please note this date change from our summer mailing.

PARCC Scores – Reminder
If your child attended Janney last year as a 3rd-5th grader, you will receive your child’s individual PARCC score report in the mail soon.  If you do not receive the report by Friday, September 7, please contact the main office.  As a school, 79% of our students scored proficient or advanced on the English Language Arts (ELA) assessment, and 81% of students scored proficient or advanced on the Math assessment.
