Dear Janney Community,

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and healthy.

This Thursday, October 1st at 9:15am, AP Barnhart and I will host the first session in a series of “Admin Chats.”  Thursday’s session will focus on student assessments and teacher feedback – the topic of this session is in response to requests that were made by parents and caregivers during our Back to School Night sessions and our Town Halls this summer.  We are in the midst of administering beginning of year assessments and all of our grade levels have used Canvas to submit an assignment, so the topic is timely and appropriate.  Please note that the session will take place on Zoom and you must RSVP to receive the meeting link.  A recording will be posted to our Janney SharePoint site after the event.

It is important to note that Thursday’s talk will not address plans for re-opening and here’s why: I do not have any information to share with the staff or the broader community at this time.  Many of you have reached out after watching the Mayor’s press conference last week and listening to news reports this weekend.  As the Mayor and Chancellor stated, the goal is to re-open all school buildings to some students during the second advisory – but it is important to note that a final decision has not been made.  Thank you for your patience as we wait to learn more about the DCPS plans.

I know that this has been an incredibly frustrating time and that many of you have shown a tremendous amount of patience and understanding.  I also know that there is a desire to interact with classmates in-person and to organize socially distanced, in-person events.  Our teachers and school staff cannot help to organize or to coordinate those events in any way, so please do not put them in an awkward position and ask them for help, for advice, or for their thoughts.  DCPS has clearly stated that we cannot host or sponsor in-person events at this time.

The only additional announcement is from Ms. McCrackin regarding a call for more volunteers to maintain the Janney garden:
Janney Gardeners, remember Fall is the harvest season!
The sign-up genius for working in the Janney Garden has been extended through October, and includes tips on finding the last raspberries, eggplants, watermelons, tomatoes and more… lots of small treasures to harvest and take home. We also want to put the garden nicely to bed for the winter, and make it easy to start back up in the Spring. Thanks to all our faithful volunteers and we welcome new families. You will find all the information you need in the sign-up genius.

Next week, I will share information on what to expect at the upcoming Parent Teacher Conference Day.  Please note that this is a No School day for students, meaning that live, virtual instruction will not be offered to our students.

Thank you for continuing to support one another and for focusing on what brings us together as a Janney community during this time.

Sincerely,

Alysia Lutz, Principal
