Dear Janney Families,

The weather has turned cold this week and we expect to be outside at recess every day.  Please remember to dress your child appropriately.  This means legs and arms must be covered when the temperature drops below 40 degrees.  If your child wants to wear shorts to school, s/he must bring a pair of pants/leggings/etc. to wear during recess.  Thank you for your support.

I look forward to seeing many of you at this Saturday’s Janney 5K!  A few special guests will be in attendance cheering on the Janney community.  A huge thanks goes out to the 5K Committee as this annual event involves many months of planning, meetings, and permitting!

The Student Support Services column will resume next week with Dr. Margaret Mallory authoring November’s entries. The first announcement in this week’s principal’s letter is about a parent evening that members of our Student Support Services team are hosting in December.  I have included an update regarding fingerprinting at Janney, and have also included follow-up communication from COO Patrick Davis regarding the boil water advisory that was issued on Friday.

The remainder of the newsletter includes a letter from the PTA presidents with many important updates including information about this weekend’s 5K and the upcoming Raffle.  Remaining content includes: the announcement of The Little Mermaid Jr. as the Janney Spring Musical for 4th and 5th graders; information about WinterFest and the Winter Market Vendor registration; notice that the Yetis are coming; and, information about our upcoming 5K race.

Enjoy your week!

Save the Date: Janney Parent Forum, December 4 from 6-7pm
Do you find yourself repeating directions over and over to your child? Is getting out of the house on time becoming an issue? Are behavior concerns turning into frustrations that rob family time of fun and joy? Come to the Janney Parenting Forum! On December 4th members of the Student Support Team will provide a space for you to share your parenting concerns with others who are experiencing similar issues.  Give advice, get advice or and maybe walk away with some new strategies to try at home.  More information, including an opportunity for RSVP, will be included in next week’s newsletter.

Boil Water Advisory Lifted: Update 11/12/19
Dear Janney Community,
At DCPS, we are committed to fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment. Communicating home about issues that arise during the school day is important to our partnership with families.

On Friday, November 4, we shared DC Water issued a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for parts of Upper Northwest. They advised customers who experienced no water or a pressure drop to boil water for cooking and drinking in the affected areas until further notice and out of an abundance of caution, we shut the drinking water sources off in the building. A mandatory two-day testing period took place over the weekend and as of Sunday, November 10, the boil water advisory was lifted – this means the water sources in the building have been returned to service and tap water can be used for all purposes.

Thank you for your patience during this process. If you have any additional questions about a Boil Water Advisory, please visit this website https://www.dcwater.com/boilwaterFAQ or contact me at Patrick.davis@k12.dc.gov.

Fingerprinting and Clearance Information: Update
Please note that we had to reschedule the November fingerprinting event at Janney.  The DCPS Clearance team was able to offer us make-up dates in December and January.  I offered those dates to the parents who were signed up for the original November event and am offering the limited remaining spots to the broader community via the links below.  Please note that our goal is now to comply with the clearance requirement by the end of the school year.  We will work with the Clearance team to offer a few additional dates in the early Spring in order to make the process a bit easier on our community.

December 3-5, 2019.
January 14-15, 2020

Please note that you only need to sign-up for one time slot per person.  Also, if you have not signed up, please do not show up as a walk-in.  The Clearance team has been very clear that they do not accept walk-ins.

Finally, if you have a Secret or a Top Secret federal government security clearance, you do not need to complete the DCPS clearance process.  I’ve included more information below:

Individuals who have a Secret or Top Secret clearance don’t need to be fingerprinted by DCPS. They are to send the Federal Clearance Form, along with TB test results (taken within the last 1 year) and a copy of their government-issued photo ID to dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov  for processing. Lastly, they do need to complete an online DCPS clearance application.
