Dear Janney Families,

Welcome to the first Tuesday newsletter of the 2019-2020 school year!  At present count, we have 750 students enrolled at Janney, with over 500 families represented.  It has been an exciting two days reconnecting with returning staff and welcoming new staff to our community.  I trust that you and your child(ren) had an exciting summer and are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Please note that we will host our annual Fall Picnic on Friday, September 6th.  We will also host a Garden Clean-up Day on Saturday, September 7th; more information will be included in next week’s newsletter.

We look forward to seeing all 1st-5th grade students on Monday, August 26th at 8:35am on the turf field!  The Jamboree map is linked here.

Janney will host its first Community Night of the school year on Thursday, September 12th at 6pm.  We are thrilled to welcome Dr. James Gordon from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, who will engage with our community around self-care routines and support in response to everyday stress and trauma. We’ll experience meditation, movement, music, and more with him, and learn how to use them to reduce stress and enhance resilience. His widely-acclaimed new book, “The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing After Trauma” will be on sale. For more about The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, please visit https://cmbm.org.

We all struggle with managing everyday stress and often do not have enough time for proper self-care.  This is a great opportunity to learn self-care routines as we begin the new school year.  Free child care will be offered via JAC for Janney students attending this event.  Please let us know if you plan to take advantage of the child care by signing up here.

School Security Procedures
I’d like to take this opportunity to review our security procedures.  Please read carefully as there are a few changes to our morning drop-off procedures as we continue to prioritize student safety. Additionally, we will continue to have two security guards stationed at Janney this year, and staff assignments are forthcoming.

Beginning Monday August 26, we will use the front Albemarle St. entrance as the main entry point for all morning JAC drop-off.  One of our security guards will be on duty at the Albemarle entrance beginning at 7:30am.  Please note that the main office does not open until 8 am, so people entering via the Albemarle St entrance are doing so for JAC or morning Language class drop-off ONLY.

We will open the turf field doors and the Albemarle doors at 8:20 am to assist with our morning arrival.  The turf field doors will be locked at 8:45 am, and the Albemarle doors will be locked at 9:00 am.  Students are marked tardy if they arrive after 8:50 am.

Please know that you will be asked to show your ID as you sign-in when you enter the building during school hours (8:50 am – 3:20 pm).  All of your faces are new to our security guards, so thank you in advance for demonstrating patience and respect as they work to ensure that our students are safe during the school day.

All homeroom teachers will return students to their morning arrival locations for afternoon dismissal.  If your student is not enrolled in any afterschool activities and you arrive after 3:30 pm, you can pick your child up in the main office.  Please make sure that you communicate any dismissal changes with your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.  We are a large school and we strive to create a warm and welcoming campus while also prioritizing student safety.  If you have any concerns, please reach out to a member of the administrative team.

With a large and active community, it is important to streamline communication so that information is available to our families in a predictable and accessible manner.  We will send out the community newsletter electronically each Tuesday evening, and links to our Take Home Tuesday announcements will be included in that email.  If teachers have important information that requires your attention or your signature, your child’s teacher will send home a folder on Tuesday with this information.  Weekly principal letters will be posted to the website in order to ensure that all community members have access to important information.  All teachers are expected to send out their weekly classroom newsletter by Tuesday evening.

Rainy Day Arrival and Dismissal
In the event of rainy weather in the morning, we will open the turf field doors and the Albemarle St doors by 8:20 am to allow students and families entrance to the building.  We ask all students to either wait in the cafeteria (for those entering via the Albemarle St doors) or the gym (for those entering via the turf field doors) until 8:35 am when all students are released to their homerooms.  Adults do not need to wait with their students once they arrive in the cafeteria or gym.  Once students are released to their homerooms, we ask all adults to say goodbye to their students in the cafeteria or gym rather than accompanying them directly to class.

In the event of rainy weather in the afternoon, we will follow an indoor dismissal and adults will pick students up directly from their classroom.  We will open the Albemarle St and the turf field doors at 3:05 pm.  Please note that we follow a rolling dismissal: PK/K @ 3:10; 1st-3rd @ 3:15; and 4/5 @3:20. If a student is not picked up by 3:30 pm, the student is taken to the main office and a parent is called.

Upcoming Events
For the month of September, we will hold grade level coffees so that families from each grade level get to know each other in a smaller, more informal setting.  AP Barnhart or I will be present for at least a portion of each coffee.  The grade level coffees will take place in the cafeteria.

Grade level coffees:
PK/K: September 4  @ 8:45 am
1st/2nd: September 11 @ 8:45 am
3rd/4th/5th: September 18 @ 8:45 am

We will also host Open Houses by grade level throughout the year.  This is a chance for parents and families to visit a child’s classroom for a short time to see the learning in action.  The Open Houses will begin directly after Jamboree, at approximately 8:45 am.  A schedule of Open Houses will appear in this space soon.

JAC @ Back-to-School Night
Janney+ staff will provide child care services for Back to School Night for students who are already enrolled in JAC on Wednesdays. Please drop off your child at the mulch playground and be sure to sign them in. Staff will be available to receive students beginning at 5:45p. Students will transition to the gym for a movie at 7pm. Be sure to sign out your child at pick-up. If you plan to use Janney+ services at any point during Back-to-School Night, please register using this Google doc link.

If your child is not enrolled in JAC, we kindly ask that you do not drop them off for Janney+ services while you participate in Back-to-School Night. This is for safety reasons. Given the size of our school community, ratios can quickly become very high if children who are not enrolled are dropped-off. Please note that we are unable to register your child for just one day of JAC services for this.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Alysia Lutz, Principal
