Janney+ Care

Janney_JACJanney Auxiliary Care

Program Information

Janney Auxiliary Care (JAC) enrollment is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of all of our Janney families. The JAC program offers students the opportunity to build relationships with caring adults and peers while having breakfast at school, playing games and creating artwork, and playing outdoors. They also enjoy special events like Bingo, the JAC Talent Show, Holiday events, and JAC Carnival Day. JAC offers a 1:10 student to counselor ratio and a regular routine, emphasizing play, good citizenship, and close relationships.

In an effort to keep all students safe, Janney+ follows the regular school-day nut-free policy for all programming. This nut-free policy includes those products that have peanuts and tree nuts in the ingredients list. Check for nut products and by-products in foods sent to school. Products that list nuts in the ingredients are not permitted. Note this nut-free policy extends to all Janney+ camp days, including offsite field trips.

Morning Care. This service is offered 7:30–8:35 a.m. Children have breakfast and play games with peers and JAC Counselors. Morning care begins August 26, 2019.

Aftercare. This service is offered 3:15–6:00 p.m. Children are enrolled in grade level classes with other JAC students. Aftercare begins August 26, 2019.

  • Late Stay. This service is offered 6:00–6:30 p.m. JAC aftercare families can add-on this service and extend your child’s day to 6:30 on any of the days they are enrolled. Late Stay begins August 26, 2019.
  • Travel Services. This is an add-on service for students enrolled in aftercare and is offered on a first-come-first-served basis. A JAC counselor escorts children to and from after-school classes within approximately .6 miles of Janney. Given the high demand for this service, we are not able to provide services for every Travel request. Travel Services begins September 3, 2019.

Drop-in Care. For families that do not need regular JAC care, Drop-in for morning and aftercare begins September 3, 2019.

Full and Half Day Camps. Janney+ offer care for many of the days DCPS is closed, including Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Programs. More information and links to register can be found on our Camps page.

Program Registration

Our programs use the Campsite registration system. You may log in to your family’s Campsite account to register or view your current registrations, pay a balance, complete your child’s enrollment forms and change enrollment details, and update your family information. If needed, create your Campsite account using the link at the bottom of the log in page.

Morning and Aftercare. You may enroll your child in JAC up to a week before the start of the month when care is needed or for annual services. Late stay can be added as a session option during registration.

JAC registration requests after the close of registration will be assessed a $25 late fee.

Travel Care. This service must be approved by the JAC Director before families may register. To register for Travel, email the Director with the day, time, and location details for your Travel needs at JAC@janneyschool.org. The Director will accommodate all possible Travel requests while ensuring the safety of students. If we can accommodate your request, the Director will inform you via email and add Travel to your JAC registration.

Drop-in Care. To register for Drop-in morning care, come to the school cafeteria to drop off and sign-in your child. You will be billed for services within Campsite. For Drop-in aftercare, email our Janney+ Attendance Clerk at plusattendance@janneyschool.org. Include your child’s homeroom teacher on the email to ensure he/she knows to send your child to JAC on the requested day. You will receive a confirmation if care is available and will be billed for the care within our Campsite system. By requesting Drop-in care you agree to all JAC terms and conditions of use as described in our Janney+ Waiver. You may request to view the waiver by emailing PlusED@janneyschool.org.

Tuition reduction is offered on a needs-basis. To apply, email the Janney+ Executive Director at PlusED@janneyschool.org.

Program Policies and Procedures

Parent Handbook. A complete reporting of our policies and procedures for the 2019-2020 school year is in our 2019-20 Janney+ Parent Handbook received upon registration in your Campsite Parent Dashboard.

Daily Morning Care. Drop-off for JAC morning care is in the cafeteria any time after 7:30a.m. where children will meet our morning care team and join their peer groups for indoor or outdoor play. If your child is new to Janney or JAC and does not know our routine, please escort your child to the cafeteria. DCPS offers breakfast for students during morning care hours. Please discuss with your child in advance if they are supposed to have breakfast at school.

Daily Aftercare Schedule. JAC provides students with a structured and stimulating environment before and after regular school hours. Our longer program in the afternoon offers both routine and choice: students enjoy snack, afternoon meeting, and outdoor or indoor recreation with the same grade-level group of students daily, and end the evening with structured game time within mixed-age small groups.

By offering choices within structure, JAC allows students to try new activities and broaden horizons while remaining safe and supervised. Afternoon JAC students can also take advantage of the enrichment activities offered by our Janney Enrichment Program (JEP) and our Janney Elementary Language Program (JELP). Our counselors work together to usher students between activities. If JEP and JELP students are registered for JAC afterwards, parents may request that students go to the library to work on homework before joining regularly scheduled JAC activities.

  • 3:10-3:20p.m. Students arrive at their JAC classes. PK and kindergarten students are escorted from their homeroom teachers to their JAC counselors, while older students walk to their JAC classrooms independently.
  • 3:20-4:30p.m. Greeting and attendance/check in, snack, and homework time. JAC offer students designated homework time Monday-Thursday each week. Students in 1st to 5th grade are offered 15 minutes to work on their homework. Students needing additional time to complete homework, or who are required to complete their homework at their parent’s request, go to the library before joining regularly scheduled JAC activities. By 4:30p.m., students transition to indoor or outside activities, weather permitting.
  • 4:30-5:15p.m. Outside play/games. In the event of poor weather, games and activities take place in JAC classrooms until 4:30 p.m.
  • 5:15-5:30p.m. Depending on the weather and time of year, students participate in mixed-age activities. PK students stay with their JAC class during this time and kindergarten students can choose whether they are ready to participate.
  • 6:00p.m. Final dismissal. Any student still present is sent to Late Stay.
  • 6:30p.m. End of Late Stay. All students must be picked up. Building closes.

Pick-up and Sign-out. It is Janney+ policy that parents or legal guardians always sign-out your child. Remember to inform us if your child will not attend JAC or if someone other than an authorized person will pick up your student. That person should bring identification in order for staff to approve student release. All pick up changes should be emailed to:

JAC pick-up procedures are as follows:

  • Enter the West-side, front entrance of the school at the atrium. For student and staff safety, the school’s front doors are locked at time of pick up. Do not attempt to enter through the school’s front entrance.
  • All students must be signed-out on at the front desk with the Janney+ Attendance Clerk. A responsible party must sign students out. If a person other than a parent or regular caregiver, as indicated during the registration process, will pick up the student, please inform the program by emailing plusattendance@janneyschool.org.
  • Students who walk home by themselves without an adult may only do so if a note from a parent or guardian has been provided to the JEP Director or permission has been granted in the Campsite system.
  • All students must be picked up by 6p.m. unless registered for Late Stay, which ends at 6:30p.m. Any child not picked up by the end of Late Stay at 6:30p.m. will be assessed a late fee as determined by the JAC Program Director, but no less than $20 per any portion of each 15 minutes beyond 6:30p.m.

Behavioral Expectations. Students are expected to act in a manner appropriate for a school environment. Persistent behavioral issues will be addressed with parents and the school and could result in dismissal from JAC. In such cases, refunds are not provided.

Cancellation Policy. For JAC programs, there is a 20% non-refundable deposit at the time of registration. Families are responsible for giving 30-days notice of cancellation before receiving a refund. A $15 fee is assessed for all cancellations.

Contact JAC. The JAC Director, Sara Cohen, can be reached by email year round at JAC@janneyschool.org or by phone at 202-442-8673 during the school year.
