If your student has attended Janney before, log into the Aspen Parent Portal to get started.
Find your Login ID by searching your emails for “familyportal.aspen@k12.dc.gov”
Click “To Re-enroll students and other forms” to begin.*
Submit required proof of residency documentation.
Submit! You will receive a confirmation email once your submission is received, reviewed, and accepted/declined.
*If enrolling a sibling who has NOT yet attended Janney, click “Enroll Student” instead of “To Re-enroll” and follow the prompts to submit proof of residency and proof of age documentation.

New Families

If your student has NOT attended Janney before, create an account in the Aspen Parent Portal.
Click “Enroll Student” to begin.*
Submit required proof of residency AND proof of age documentation.
Submit! You will receive a confirmation email once your submission is received, reviewed, and accepted/declined.

Open Houses are perfect opportunities for families to learn about the school, its curricula, support services, student life, aftercare and enrichment, and the community that makes Janney truly unique. Participants should enter through the main door on Albemarle Street. Open Houses begin at 9:15am and include a presentation by administrators, as well as other Janney and after-school staff.

Am I “in-boundary” for Janney Elementary?

Families who live within the Janney boundary may enroll their children at any time during the school year. Any child living in-boundary is guaranteed placement in Kindergarten through Grade 5. To determine if you are in the Janney boundary, please refer to the DCPS website.

Families who live out of boundary, or those seeking placement in Pre-Kindergarten, may apply through the DCPS Lottery System.

What is an acceptable proof of residency?

Families must provide proof of residency when completing the enrollment packet. For a list of acceptable proof, click here.

Only one item is needed if you supply a pay stub, documentation of financial assistance, certified copy of Form D40, military housing orders, or an embassy letter. Learn more here.

Alternatively, a driver’s license and current, valid vehicle registration, submitted together, are one of the easier methods to prove residency.

Please note that all residency documents must be in the same name as the name of the parent who is completing the enrollment online. Be sure that your name matches (especially if you use a nickname or shortened version of your full name).

Which health forms are required?

All students must turn in DC Universal Health and Oral Health Assessment forms each year.

Health forms must be completed by your student(s) health care providers (typically their pediatrician and their dentist) and submitted by their guardian online through the DCPS website.

DC Universal Health, which includes certification of immunizations, and Oral Health Assessment forms are due by the first day of school; however, you may enroll before the forms are completed.

What is the birthday cut-off?

All children must be age-appropriate for their respective grade on or before September 30, 2025 for the 2025-2026 school year.

For example: a child must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2025 to enter Kindergarten.

A child must be 4 years old on or before September 30 to enter Pre-Kindergarten.

How do we enroll in Pre-Kindergarten?

Pre-K attendance is not compulsory in Washington, DC. DCPS does not guarantee spots in schools for all students.

Janney uses the DCPS Lottery System to allocate available Pre-K spots. All interested students, no matter where they live, must enter the Pre-K lottery to obtain a Pre-K spot at Janney. To apply for the Pre-K lottery, please use the DCPS Lottery System and apply by March 1, 2025. Lottery results are released March 29, 2025 to families that have received a match. Matched families will be given until May 1, 2025 to accept their matched offer and to enroll their student(s). All students must be 4 years old on or before September 30, 2025 to enter Pre-Kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year.

Where should 6th grade students enroll?

Sixth grade students may enroll at Alice Deal Middle School or apply to another middle school through the DCPS Lottery System.

If the student will not be attending a DCPS middle school, they must fill out a withdrawal form to officially withdraw from the DCPS system. Contact the front office for a form.
