In 2012 the DC Council passed the Youth Bullying Prevention Act to address bullying on a comprehensive, citywide level. The school social worker is available as a resource to work with children, parents, and teachers. The services include working directly with students—individually, in groups, and in classrooms—on adjustment in school, social and emotional well-being, classroom environment, educational needs, and character development. As part of this work, the social worker monitors attendance and assists with the development of disciplinary and behavioral plans. Other duties include overseeing volunteer efforts in the school and community-related activities. The social worker is also responsible for the standardized testing program and will help interpret test results.
Additionally, the social worker coordinates programs to help 5th-grade students transition to Deal Middle School, including Deal Buddy Day, placement tests, registration for classes, and class presentations on transitioning to a middle school environment. The social worker also provides support and information on dealing with difficult life situations or events that negatively affect a student or students, and when needed, makes appropriate referrals to community resources. This program provides additional language development support support to qualifying students with limited proficiency in the English language. The ELL teacher regularly collaborates with classroom teachers to provide appropriate instruction that meets individual student needs based on a student’s English language proficiency level. English language instruction balances all four language acquisition skills—listening, speaking, reading and writing—as well as cognitive and academic development.
All ELLs are assessed annually in May for English language proficiency using the WIDA ACCESS TEST. The test results will determine whether students will continue with the program the following academic year.

Janney School has developed a model inclusion program for children with special needs. Identified students receive support in their regular classrooms along with their peers. Licensed special education teachers work alongside classroom teachers and intervention specialists to provide modified classroom instruction. Whenever possible, interventions are provided in the general education classroom. Related services including speech and language, occupational therapy, behavioral/social-emotional support, and physical therapy are available to students identified to have special education needs. Students may qualify for special education services or a 504 plan based on disability criteria as established through federal legislation, IDEA.
