A Note from the PTA Co-Presidents

Dear Janney Families,

Please join us Wednesday night for the 7:30 PTA meeting to present next year’s PTA budget & please see the PTA Nominations for the Executive Board below. The  elections will take place at the Wednesday PTA general meeting.  Babysitting will be provided.
Please also join us Friday night at 6pm for the Spring Picnic & Raffle. This picnic we are serving pizza rather than hotdogs.  Families with last names A-K please bring a side dish to share, families with last names L-Z bring dessert to share.  We could use a few more volunteers for set-up, cashiering, food running and cleanup.  If interested email Lance Steahly at lsteahly@gmail.com.

Raffle tickets are still for sale by your parent homeroom reps. Tickets are just  $25 per ticket, or get 5 for $100.  Cool prizes include:

* 2 of the newest-model iPads;
* a $500 gift certificate to  Bloomingdales;
* a $500 gift certificate to Hudson Trail Outfitters;
* a  $295 spa package at Elizabeth Arden which includes a massage, facial,
   customized eye contour, pedicure, manicure and makeup refresher;
* and a  $200 gift card to Rosa Mexicana restaurant right here in Tenleytown.

Janney merchandise will also be for sale during the Picnic so bring along your checkbook :)   Also keep an eye out for  “Fifth-Grade Fridays” – an after-school bake sale this Friday and all Fridays in May. Proceeds benefit the fifth-grade overnight trip to Echo Hill.

Have a great week!

Scrabble Champs

Congratulations to 4th-graders Chloe Fatsis and Zara Hall, who captured first place of Division A of the first D.C. Public Schools Scrabble Championship at Wilson High School on Saturday. The tournament was directed by Chloe’s dad, Stefan, who runs the Janney Scrabble club. Forty-eight students in grades 4 through 12 from eight public schools across the city competed in the event, which was sponsored by DCPS.

Janney had the biggest contingent at the tournament, 18 players in all. Chloe and Zara had a perfect 4-0 record in the top group, which consisted entirely of students from Janney and Deal Middle School. Janney also captured the top spots in Division . Fourth-graders Lucy Levenson and Madelyn Shapiro finished first with a 4-0 record, and 4th-graders Nicholas Spasojevic and Felix Garland took second with a 3-1 record.

The Washington Post covered the tournament-with a front-page story in Sunday’s paper. And you can see full results on the D.C. School Scrabble blog.
Congratulations to all of our Scrabblers!

Help Shape Janney‘s Future
Join the LSAT

If you are interested in helping to mold Janney‘s future, please consider running for the 2012-2013 Local School Advisory Team (LSAT).

Elections will be held on May 24th and 25th to elect three new parent representatives to the Local School Advisory Team.  The LSAT is an elected body that supports and advises the Principal on matters related to advancing student achievement and continuing to grow a school community that is focused on high expectations and high achievement for all students.

The LSAT consists of six parent representatives (three rotate off each year), 1 building representative (WTU) or designee, 5 teachers, and 1 non-instructional staff member.

The LSAT meets monthly, and holds additional meetings as needed.

The LSAT is seeking candidates who are willing to serve a two-year term; who represent the diversity of the Janney school community; and who share the following characteristics:

–They are already knowledgeable about much of what is occurring at school, or they       are prepared to learn fast;
–They consistently show good judgment;
–They are professional in their actions toward and treatment of others;
–They are focused on student achievement for all students;
–They are advocates for their school’s success;
–They are good listeners;
–They are excellent collaborative workers; and.
–They understand the importance of hearing all voices

Additionally, it is important that parent representatives are willing to work to represent the ideas, perspectives, concerns, and opinions of all parents in the school community.

If you are interested in being a candidate for the LSAT please write a brief bio about yourself, and email the bio to LSAT election committee c/o Kim Curtis (kac1270@aol.com) by May 18th.  The bio statement could include the following information:

·  Grade levels of current students at Janney
·  Goals as a member of the LSAT
·  Past experiences that align with the described characteristics (see above) of LSAT members
·  Experiences working with a diverse group toward a common goal

Candidate bios will be included in the May 22nd Take Home Tuesday and posted on the Janney website.
