There are many leadership roles for parents within the Janney community. Below is a description of the groups and what they do, and how they are formed.
Parent/Teacher Association (PTA)
Janney’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) designs, solicits funds for, and implements a wide range of programs that complement and enhance the educational and other programs offered by D.C. Public Schools. Its priorities are determined by input from Janney’s parents, teachers and staff, and LSAT.
The Janney PTA accomplishes these things through close to 40 volunteer committees that organize efforts in arts education, school communication, and community outreach, instructional support, facilities and grounds maintenance, and fundraising.
The Janney PTA Executive Board leads and coordinates PTA programs. The board consists of two presidents, two vice presidents, two treasurers, and, two secretaries, the Janney principal, and three Janney staff members. This board is elected by the general PTA membership.
The full membership of the Janney PTA meets 6 times in the evening from September through June. All members of the Janney community are encouraged to join and attend.
Local School Advisory Team (LSAT)
The LSAT advises the Principal on issues related to the Local School Plan: what is needed at the school, where we want to be as a school, whether we are there, and if not, how we should get there.
The Janney LSAT is composed of the Principal, six teachers, six parents, a student representative, and, at times, a community representative. The LSAT supports the Principal’s implementation of the DCPS Teaching and Learning Framework by advising the Principal on matters related to teaching and learning, leadership, job embedded professional development, resources, safe and effective learning environments, and family and community engagement.
The LSAT is an elected body that serves in an advisory capacity to the Principal by:
- Receiving and making appropriate recommendations regarding the development of the Local School Plan,
- Monitoring and assessing the implementation of the Local School Plan,
- Using assessment results to develop and modify specific strategies for school improvement, and
- Ensuring compliance with established guidelines, contracts, and District rules.
LSAT meetings are held monthly and are open to the Janney community for observation. One meeting each semester is held where non-LSAT members can participate rather than observe. Teacher representatives to the LSAT are elected annually by the faculty each year. Parent representatives are elected to serve staggered 2-year terms to ensure continuity. Elections for the LSAT are held each Spring.
After School Advisory Team
The After School Advisory Team is a new group that has been established this year to advise the principal on matters related to Janney’s before and after care program, as well as the enrichment program.
This year, the group is made up of three former Janney Extended Day parent board members, two former After School Working Group parent members, one PTA parent member, one LSAT parent member, two at-large parent members, one teacher, and the principal.
The group meets meets the third Tuesday of each month. Minutes of those meetings will be posted on the website.
School Improvement Team (SIT)
DCPS policy requires that a School Improvement Team be established to participate in the development of the education specification and schematic design for the school.
The Janney SIT is a working group made up of Janney staff, parents, the principal, and community representatives. This group followed the development of modernization and addition plans for the school.
A new SIT team will be established this year to consult on issues that have arisen post construction and to disseminate relevant information to the community. The composition of this group has not been established yet but it will be established this fall.
